How to Apply for Need-Based Aid

(1) Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in one of two ways:

(a) File over the internet at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

(b) Use the hard copy FAFSA and mail it in to the Federal Processing Center in the pre-addressed envelope provided with the FAFSA (Note: FAFSAs are available in all high-school guidance offices and college financial aid offices.)

NOTE: Be sure to list Flagler College in the Step Six Section and use our Federal School Code: 007893. Flagler's deadline for filing is April 1st of prior year (example; April 1, 2006 for Sept., 2007). Flagler recommends filing the FAFSA as early as possible and with estimated amounts if necessary to meet this deadline.

(2) You will receive the results from the processor after they process the form. NOTE: Be sure to READ the summary cover letter letter carefully. Corrections may be required and explained therein. Report any corrections that need to be made.

(3) If you listed Flagler College and our school code, the Office of Financial Aid will be able to draw down your FAFSA information electronically. You will be able to check that the financial aid office has received the FAFSA results by checking your "Documents" tab on Financial Aid On-line.

(4) If you are selected for "verification," you will be requested to submit both your and your parents' tax returns to the Office of Financial Aid. (If you are independent, you do not have to provide your parents' tax return.) Also, a Verification Worksheet may be requested. This form can be downloaded from the Financial Aid page, on the "Forms" tab, if requested.

(5) Complete the Flagler College Financial Aid Application and return it directly to the Office of Financial Aid. This application can be found on Financial Aid On-line and may be mailed or faxed to (904) 819-6453. This form is particularly important to Florida residents for annual application for the FRAG. All financial aid applicants are required to submit this form every year.

(6) The priority deadline date for all students is April 1. Applications received after that date will be handled on first-come, first-served basis. It should be noted that missing the deadline of April 1 does not exclude a student from qualifying for some need-based aid such as the Pell Grant and Stafford Loan. However after April 1st the financial aid office cannot guarantee financial aid will be processed in time to meet the payment deadlines.

Need students who indicate on their financial aid application that they are interested in working on campus can download a work application from the "Forms" tab on the financial aid page to complete and return, at which time they will be considered for work on campus. A need student who declines work but changes his or her mind later can apply for a job through the Office of Financial Aid and will be placed on a work waiting list.

Memorial scholarships have their own application process. For a list of scholarship search websites, please go to the miscellaneous financial aid information page.

Applying for Non-Need Financial Aid

Application procedures for each non-need financial aid program are listed below.

There are four categories:

Federal

Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
Flagler College participates in the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Direct Loan Program. The College uses the USDE as its single source for student and parent loans. The Direct Loan Program benefits the student borrower by making the application process easier for the student and the school and expedites the receipt of loan funds. To receive a student loan, student must complete the FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and be sure to list Flagler's Title IV Code on the form - 007893. The student also has to complete the direct loan application form provided by the Financial Aid Office.

Parent Loan (PLUS)
Flagler College participates in the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Direct Loan Program. The College uses the USDE as its single source for student and parent loans. No other lenders' forms are accepted; please call the Financial Aid Office at (904) 819-6225 to request a Direct Loan form to apply for a loan.

Parents may borrow through the federal loan program the full amount of the student's Cost of Attendance less any other aid received.

Cost of Attendance not only includes the actual costs of Tuition and Room & Board (if the student is boarding) but also estimated amounts for Off-campus Living Expenses (if not a boarding student), Books & Supplies, Transportation and Personal Expenses.

If a parent is denied a PLUS Loan due to a negative credit report, then the student is eligible to borrow additional Stafford Student Loan funds above the usual annual limit. Grade level determines how much additional loan funds the student may apply for in this instance. Freshmen and Sophomores can borrow $4,000 more per year, and Juniors and Seniors $5,000 more per year.

The FAFSA is not required to apply for a Parent Plus Loan only.
