A Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) Database Administrator installs and maintains Microsoft SQL Server, multidimensional databases and user accounts as well as ensures database availability, recovery, and reporting. They create and execute server automation scripts and monitor and resolve SQL server activity. They further have input in the design and technical decision-making that are essential for successfully implementing technology projects. Administrators also deploy, build, design, optimize and operate various technologies.
Database Administrators must take into consideration the entire working environment, which includes regulatory requirements, network systems and database considerations. They must document and test high-availability database solutions. They further must identify and rectify performance issues using SQL Server. They are also responsible for data integrity and system availability.
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications or some related field. Some organizations give preference to those with one or two years of experience, while others prefer those with a master’s degree or some specialization. Currently, organizations are giving preference to those with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a Master of Information Systems Management (MISM) when hiring database administrators.
