Description

The course will provide an introductory overview of abstract algebra. Elementary group theory: definitions of groups and subgroups, symmetric groups, group homomorphisms, cosets and Lagrange's theorem, the first isomorphism theorem, quotient groups and normal subgroups. Ring theory: definitions of rings, integral domains, and fields; ideals and quotient rings; ring homomorphism. Basic field theory covering algebraic extensions and splitting fields. All topics will be motivated historically.
